I had read The Widow's House by chance and had liked it but not so much that I would go rooting out for all the books by the author and gobble it up. But The Night Visitors made me want to do exactly that. Now I really have to search out all her books and read them.
A snowstorm, ghosts, chilling truths, a past mystery and strong characters what's not to love in this distinctive story of 3 people. Oren and Alice are escaping from an abusive situation and Mattie is the social worker who is assigned to greet and meet them but something about Oren tugs at Mattie's heart and instead of following the usual protocols she takes them home. The mystery intensifies from then on and the tense atmosphere with terrible snowstorm adds to the chill. The supernatural element in the story is exceptionally done, it doesn't interfere with the crux of the story but adds an element of mystique and allure.
Salute to all the social workers who give so much of their lives in support of the others.
