really liked it
bookshelves: 2012, historical-fiction

I have really mixed feelings about this book. I felt like it had all the pieces necessary for me to really love it: historical fiction setting, characters I knew of and want to know more about, it was really well written. But I didn't actually like any of the characters. Ernest was broken and cruel and Hadly was boring and a doormat. I'm not sure I would have wanted to be married to either of them myself.

I think I've settled on 4 stars because while I wouldn't say that I loved the story, I think it is going to stick with me for a long time.
