This is a book of short stories about a detective (operative) working for the Continental Agency, told in the first person. One can imagine Hammett, himself a detective for the Pinkerton Agency, identifying with this character, and I came to like this tough guy. He's a good match for the devious criminals he has to deal with, as he can spin a tale with the best of them. Although most stories are of cases that he is assigned to, I most enjoyed a couple of tales in which he stumbles onto a situation unawares. Those stories in particular are a tangle of bad guys (and gals) all trying to double-cross each other, with the Op in the midst of the tangle.
