really liked it

Matteo Rightetto's book is a magnificent evocation of the country and ways of the people who live in the extreme north of Italy near the Austrian border. His story takes place around the turn of the last century (circa 1900) when poor peasants, their lives made much harder by the bribes they have to pay, turn to farming an illicit crop and smuggling it over the Austrian border. This is dangerous, not only for the obvious reasons but because the wild country they inhabit makes it more so.
My main complaint about this novel is the cover. The publisher did the author no favors with a stiff mosaic sketch of the land. Instead, they should have used one of the many photos the author must have taken, as I understand he has hiked all of this landscape.
But that, of course, is NOT the author's fault.
Highly recommended for something a little different...
