In this prequel to Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein , a 16 year old Victor Frankenstein finds himself on a quest for ingredients to an elixir that he thinks will save his twin brother Konrad. Using a forbidden book found in a secret alchemists lab on the Frankenstein estate, Victor, his cousin Beth and friend, Henry , race against time to gather the ingredients for the Elixir of Life.

In this Gothic adventure, Oppel sets the stage for Victor Frankenstein’s interest with alchemy over the “true” science favored by his father. This is also a story not so much of good and evil but of the darker parts of one’s’ personality. The main character Victor, knows he is flawed and sees his brother as a smarter, more talented and caring version of himself. Indeed he even questions his own motivations for trying to save his brother. Is it to gain fame, win the heart of their cousin Elizabeth, or is it truly for the love of his brother? Although the gothic style will not appeal to all readers, this a well crafted, intense novel with plenty of page - turning action.
