it was amazing
bookshelves: poetry, 2012-read

This is a beautiful collection of poems by one of my favorite poets. The narrator of the poems switches between an omniscient creator or God, the unnamed gardener, and certain plants or flowers (sometimes individually and sometimes collectively). The words are deceptively spare and simple but the many layers of meaning are rich and accessible even to my relatively untrained reading. I first read some of these poems in a college class more than a decade ago and was surprised to recognize some of these so many years later. Reading the whole collection together is an even better way to experience these poems than reading a couple of selections was.
