Fascinating study of a young American's impressions of China in the early 1980's. This book works on many levels--illustrating Chinese society, bureaucracy, politics, culture, the arts, etc. The subject is handled with a light touch and humor. Salzman was a student of Wushu (Chinese martial arts) who helped to teach English language courses in China and lived in Changsha, Hunan from 1982 to 1984. This book would be a wonderful introduction to Chinese culture for someone interested in the topic.
