really liked it

I read a fair bit of romance. It's where I lodge when I am tired or cranky. This one ended up in my pile because my mom gave it to me. I really enjoy sharing books with my mom, although our tastes are more of a venn diagram than a complete clone. She said that it was meatier and more thought-provoking than she usually read.

That's because it's about an alcoholic and his extremely competent female estate manager. Alys, the female lead, reminded me a bit of Heyer's Venetia, which is a plus. She is in charge of a family, including a beauty, but she is not whiny about it. She has set herself up in a pretty awesome life until the intrusion of the rakehell heir.

Read if: You like your romance with a bit of texture, you watching authors handle After School Special topics with reasonable dexterity, you love the tall heroines. Bonus points for all sorts of bizarre facts about sheep.

Skip if: You are in romances entirely for the froth, which is legit. This one is not entirely frothy.
