This book is more of an exploration of a spiritual journey than a historical record of the community. I suppose the author is trying to be scrupulously fair when she describes her leanings both toward believing the Lily Dale take on spirituality and away from it. But the end result just comes across as a person who is unwilling to take a stance.

Reading about the mediums, and the experiences of the seekers was interesting, but not really captivating. When the author comes across something which might be convincing, she immediately turns around and does her best to explain it all away. If anything, her attempts to do this seem to become more like whistling in the dark and refusal to take the experiences as they come.

On the whole, wishy-washy and unsatisfying. I think just staying with straight history would have made for a better book.
