End Times: More Great Adventures in Real America is an entry in Michael McCord’s series of satirical novels. These works depict a dystopian vision of the United States’ near-future. In End Times, a novel very strongly informed by the influence of Donald Trump’s leadership on the contemporary American political scene, a dictator named Bowie is in power. Bowie trumpets lies, commits murders and blankets his nation with propaganda aimed at manipulating the general public into accepting his incredibly self-serving version of reality as truth. However, there are still some people fighting against his leadership. This novel depicts a handful of these characters and their attempts to bring down the Bowie government. Two of my favourite characters in the book were Penelope and Mama Bowie. Mama Bowie was a particular highlight as her unexpected relationship with her erratic son was surprising and comical. In terms of constructive criticism, I felt that the balance between plot progression and providing exposition to the reader is more successfully handled in the latter half of the book than in the earlier chapters.
