An important book in the development of Spenser's personality and supporting cast (we meet Hawke for the first time, and his relationship with Susan progresses apace, albeit bumpily), "Promised Land" suffers from having a main plot about radical women's lib terrorists (!) who are...not very well-written. The discussions of the institution of marriage itself are thoughtful and humane, and watching Spenser and Susan try to puzzle out what their relationship is makes for interesting reading and avoids short-cutting anything with romantic cliches.
