Alright, so I confess that I am a little late to the Bill Bryson party as this was the first book by him that I have read. However, as I have become increasingly interested in the country of Australia, I figured that it was well past time that I picked up In a Sunburned Country. To say that I loved the book was an understatement.

As a reader/listener, I adored that this entire book was an informative yet sometimes hilarious love letter to Australia. I honestly felt like I was travelling with Bill as he ventured from NSW to Western Australia and everywhere in between; dropping personal anecdotes and historical facts about the places he stopped in - I found myself learning quite a lot about the sunburnt country that I never knew before.

What made this audiobook even better was that the author himself narrated this book, which I normally do not care for but given the nature of In A Sunburned Country I feel that it would not have worked as well if anyone other than Bill Bryson had been the narrator.

Overall, I cannot in good conscience give In A Sunburned Country anything other than a full five stars; it made me fall in love with Australia despite never having been there. I would highly recommend this audiobook to others.

Bill Bryson
“I'm quite certain that if the rest of the world vanished overnight and the development of cricket were left in Australian hands, within a generation, the players would be wearing shorts and using the bats to hit each other, and the thing is, it'd be a much better game for it.”
Bill Bryson, In a Sunburned Country

Bill Bryson
“It is not true that the English invented cricket as a way of making all other human endeavors look interesting and lively; that was merely an unintended side effect.”
Bill Bryson, In a Sunburned Country

Bill Bryson
“I love a sunburnt country, A land of sweeping plains, Of ragged mountain ranges, Of droughts and flooding rains.”
