High school senior Amber has learned the hard way to protect herself from becoming too attached to anyone connected to her mother's love life. After all, something always causes the relationship to fall apart, and her mother moves on to someone else, leaving Amber to deal with the collateral damage, which sometimes involves her own chance at love and stability. To insure that she never lets down her guard, she drafts a set of rules. But those rules are very much in danger of being broken when she starts spending time with Jordan Baugh, a basketball player who is close to Cammie, the daughter of Kevin, the man with whom Amber's mother is romantically involved. Teen readers will root for the two to get together and for everything to work out on every side even while expecting the usual complications. Jordan is almost too good to be true, and readers will easily see why Amber falls for him. They'll also love Buffy, Amber's German shepherd, and Amber's determination to follow her own dreams even while also understanding her mother's financial concerns. In short, there is much here that teens will find relatable. I did find it fortunate that Amber's mother's romantic dalliances didn't result in her being uprooted from her town, but I wondered about her dormant mad basketball skills. Surely, someone needs to practice quite a lot to be able to be that accurate.
