The Gown: A Novel of the Royal Wedding
This was a huge disappointment, and the first book to be recommended by Anne Bogel that I have disliked. The story would have been much stronger without any of the chapters set in 2016 - the contemporary storyline felt horribly contrived, and it was largely unnecessary. Events set in the past were also predictable. I saw the "big reveal" (about why Ann's family never knew about her life in England) coming very early on, and the book took way too long to get there. The characters also lacked nuance. Miriam was the best developed character, but even she didn't seem to come alive for me. I waited too long for the story to pick up (250 pages!) so I decided to power through to the end, but if I'd known it never gets better, I would have set it down unfinished.
