I read this for a book discussion at the library, otherwise, I don't know if it would have been something I would have picked up on my own. It basically relates the story of Russell Baker's childhood during the Depression, but the real meat of the story has to do with his mother. She impresses on him the importance of "making something of himself", which is an idea he rails against, but then comes to accept.

It was a good, quick read. Not completely convinced it was Pulitzer material, but it was humorous, historically detailed, and heartwarming.
