I enjoyed the To Your Scattered Bodies Go and Riverworld series, and hoped to find an imaginative story for some enjoyable summer reading. I read this book without the context of the first novel, but not sure I would return to read it now. This novel reads a bit like a run-on sentence, moving swiftly from one situation to the next without direction, with the author's transparent distaste for the youth culture and gangsters of the 1960s (which feels to be a reaction to movie version of the '60s). However, he seems to have a healthy appreciation for violence and sex, along with gadgets and gizmos aplenty.
