Love that dog is a wonderful story about a boy and his dog Sky. Not very fond of poetry jack becomes intrigued by it and wants to find a way to talk about his dog. He finally finds a poem with the help of his teacher where he finally can talk about Sky.
I love how this book is done through jacks eyes in a response journal. The way Creech writes these short free verse poems grabs the readers attention. Jack gets better as the poems go on later in the book. This book makes it easy to picture the story in your head of how jack feels about poetry as well as the love for his dog.
This would be a great book to share and read in the class because lots of children struggle with poetry just like Jack. Jack needed something to inspire him and once he did then he flourished in it. This will show kids that once you find something you love or passionate about then poetry becomes a lot more fun to read about or even write. Once reading this book with students i think teachers will find that their children will start thriving in it and also enjoying what they are reading and doing. Great Book!
