This is the second time I've read this book, primarily because the first read was many years ago and I couldn't remember the plot!

Here we learn about the Lecter family's origins in Lithuania, how they tried to avoid getting caught up in the war as it rages around them, and the tragedies that befell Hannibal, his sister Mischa, and their parents. The treatment suffered by Hannibal during this time fuelled his revenge in the later years.

After living in the orphanage which took up residence in his family's former home, he moves to Paris with his Uncle and Lady Murasaki. He attends medical school and grows close to his Aunt after his Uncle dies. Learning anatomy at school, and researching the identities of his childhood tormentors, leads Hannibal to his inevitable fate of violence and cannibalism...
