I'd gone through a period when I read quite a bit of Anne Rice. This, in my opinion, is Rice's best work. And, low and behold, it has NOTHING to do with vampires. For me, I guess, that's a plus. I liked her other "vampire" books, but this one, filled the tremendous sense of time of place, not to mention the sounds of music of the time, just inspired me like no other. Set in Italy in the 18th Century, the story follows the castrati...the young men who were hailed in Europe as God's singers with their high-pitched voices and boyish bodies. Rice really does a great job of transporting us to the 1700s with her writing.
