it was amazing
bookshelves: fantasy, young-adult, best-of-2020

There are some books you read that regularly shatter your expectations of what’s going to happen in the story.

Children of Virtue and Vengeance is one of those works.

I finished this book a couple days ago. And man, did this book contain surprises at every turn. But they weren’t the surprises of unexpected plot twists.

They were the surprises of unexpected (but brilliantly set up) character decisions.

More than that, they were character decisions that explored the story’s thematic question (“How far should you go to protect your people and restore justice?”—at least that’s my interpretation of the story’s thematic question) in meaningful and intriguing ways. There aren’t many stories that keep me guessing about what characters are really in the right or in the wrong. This was one of those stories, however.

In the end, it’s one of the best YA fantasy novels I’ve ever read.

Rating: 4.5 Stars (Very Good).
