Heidi just wants to KNOW! Where she came from. Who her grammy is. And particularly what soof is. See, Mama's got a bum brain and she can only say 23 words, and one of them they just can't decipher. Which had been fine until Heidi starts obsessing over it. Her neighbor and friend Bernadette claims that there are some thing you just can't know, but Heidi refuses to believe that.

I loved the characters in this book, the liars, the truthtellers -- they all felt authentic. I loved Heidi's one-track mind -- that's so true for some kids -- that compulsion for "fairness" and "truth" without understanding the cost, the complexity, the shades of gray.
