Recommended for: baseball fans, especially girls; teachers to read aloud
Although I'm a big fan of Linda Sue Park's work, I expected to be less than enthusiastic about this baseball novel. I should have known that Ms. Park would make it about so much more than how to score a baseball game. Lovable, fallible heroine Maggie-O struggles with her Catholic faith, develops a strong bond with a young Korean boy she's never met, and cares enough about her soldier friend Jim to draw maps of the war to help her visualize what is happening on the other side of the world. Unexpectedly touching, it's a well-aimed pitch to the heart.
