If you’re born with a brain that sort of naturally analyzes stuff, noticing all the little tiny distracting things around you and then analyzing them within an inch of their lives so that you can sort through the patterns that our world tends to make and the sometimes ridiculous but endlessly intriguing conclusions to draw from them, and you quite honestly do this with anything and everything, but a good 20% of those kinds of observations your brain makes tend to be about language use...then when you try to figure out how people might pay you for your dubious talents, you decide to do sociolinguistic research for a living and you end up as, well, me.

But if you do all of those same things and you’re also actually funny, then when you try to figure out how people might pay you for your dubious talents, you start off doing a linguistics degree but quickly realize that it would be way more fun to become a cabaret artist, and you end up as Paulien Cornelisse.

And then if you’re me, and you someday end up reading Paulien Cornelisse's books, you spend the whole time musing about how bizarre it is to see your very own brain translated into a book, and lamenting about the tragedy of just how close you came to being that cool, too.
