Absolutely loved it, ticked all the boxes for me. It's a creepy gothic masterpiece of understated horror and brilliant atmosphere. Ah Manderley!
RECOMMENDED if, like me, you like elegant writing that will send shivers up your spine without ever being heavy handed and obvious. What a deft touch this author has.
Young woman, lady's companion, accompanying her employer on a vacation to Monte Carlo, finds herself being unexpectedly wooed by a wealthy and sophisticated man twice her age. Two weeks later he asks her to marry him and off she goes on her honeymoon and then to his family home, Manderley. But what is he hiding? Why is he so moody? Why is the housekeeper malicious to the new Mrs. De Winter? How is the very young lady, born into a much lower class, expected to deal with a household of servants and this incredible home which still runs like clockwork to the rules of the former Mrs. De Winter. Speaking of her, exactly what is the truth of what happened to her and can the newly married couple survive the haunting past.
