An excellent book told in sparse sentences from the point of view of a silverback gorilla named Ivan. Based on a true story (search for Ivan the gorilla online), Ivan is captured as a baby and lives with a human family until he grows too big to handle. Then he lives in a cage at a mall, where there is also an elephant, a dog, and a few other animals. He loves to draw and a young girl provides him with supplies. Illustrations compliment the story. There is not a lot of action in the story, but things do happen to keep the plot moving. Ivan’s character is very well developed and grows emotionally throughout the story.
Also, you’ve got the animal cuteness factor to appeal to kids as well as kids wanting to see the animals in a better place. In addition the book features two elephants and a dog that also live in the mall. An excellent read. Maybe an award winner?
