Written by Nikki Grimes and illustrated by Brian Collier, well respected African American children's book artists, this is a succinct history of the 44th president's life. The story is told by a Black mother to her young son and and their side conversation sporadically breaks into the narrative. It ends with the boy saying that he wants to be president one day and the mother choking back tears because his dream is finally possible.

Grimes' metaphor and simile-laden writing style makes President Obama's story read like a folktale. Collier's unique mix of painting and collage makes the story come to life. It is very well done.

The back of the book provides notes from the author and illustrator discussing their reactions to Obama's presidency; a list of additional sources; a timeline of important dates; and a family tree with a map that show Obama's international connections.
