The continuing sagas of orphan girls in this particular time period leads me to think that as a whole young girls were being fixated on as long having been orphans or semi-orphans for centuries and that Western society in general were recognising the need to make good homes and safer harbours for them that had been so neglected for so long. It is absolutely astounding how many of these types of books exist at the turn of the last century, all the way up into the time of the 19th Ammendment. It almost seems like proof of a collective consciousness.
