Smoke and Mirrors by Elly Griffiths is the second book of the Stephens and Mephisto historical mystery series, set in Brighton Beach after WWII. It's Christmastime; magician Max Mephisto is starring in Aladdin. But Detective Inspector Edgar Stephens has a grim task: investigating the murders of two children, found in the snow with candy (a la Hansel and Gretel). Imaginative Annie used to write and direct plays for the town children, always with a dark twist; her latest was "The Stolen Children". The Great Diablo (one of the Magic Men) joins Max in the theater, and reveals connections to a murder case in 1912. Many leads to follow, many interviews with families, shop keepers, school teachers, and a bachelor who set up a private theater at his home for the children. When another child goes missing and a school teacher is murdered, Edgar and Max team up in a race against time and harsh winter weather to find the killer and save the child. Great depth of characters, with historical details of post war deprivation, yet a community pulling together. Hard to put down. A completely different, yet no less compelling series than the Ruth Galloway mysteries.
