My first Kate Atkinson and I became a lifelong convert. Whitbread Book of the Year. An amazing book covering three or more generations of a family. Told by Ruby Lennox who never quite puts all the pieces together. Sort of book you want to read again, knowing the ending, so you can spot the clues in the text to see how the author did it.

2022 I listened to this 24 years later, and was incredibly grateful to myself - because when I read the original book I drew a family tree of every character - because the story is told as it would be in real life, with digressions, hopping backwards and forwards in time. I think the audiobook may get have been harder to listen to without the family tree to refer to. But I loved it just as much this time round.
