Uniquely among the Culture series, the narrators of Inversions are outsiders, with no idea that the Culture even exists, let alone that they're dealing with Contact agents operating undercover in their civilization. Someone who hadn't read any of the other books would probably have a hard time picking up on the existence of the Culture either; for them, the novel would probably read something like a medieval mystery dealing with the two mysterious figures and their strange apparent powers.

It's enjoyable enough for what it is, and does offer an interesting perspective on the Culture's Contact missions from the societies being interfered with. But it's not really science fiction as such.
