A modern classic that shows signs of being able to stand the passing of time and a proof that sci-fi can both be entertaining and tackle deep social issues without falling into the territory of propaganda. Countless extraterrestrial (or aliens... there's a very interesting debate about the use of both terms) have attempted to invade the Earth and subjugate humanity, but few have been as convincing and "other" as the Martian pioneers who behave so uncannily similar to human conquerors over other humans and humans in general over "lesser species". Of course, Wells used his novel to criticize the politics of the British Empire at its peak, but fortunately this criticism has outlive its specific references. Another interesting aspect (and one which is frequently looked over in movie adaptations) is the last chapters in which the consequences of the failed conquest will have in humanity's development... technically and scientifically, but also in social and cultural terms. Finally, it's nice to have a scientist/intellectual protagonist that doesn't suddenly become an action hero in the middle of the invasion (which is still the cliché in movies). Entertaining and clever, The War of the Worlds has still much to teach us about ourselves and our place in the universe.
