I read this aloud to William at bed time. I remembered a couple details from when my father read the Great Illustrated Classics edition to us kids. (BB getting sick from lack of a blanket, seeing Ginger again years later). I was curious how the plot wouls be with a horse narrator and such a realistic tone. Turns out that the stories are all based on morals, much like the other beloved classic Little Women. I don't really like that style of book because the morals are too heavy handed and obvious. I much prefer a book that requires a little thinking and some subtlity. Yet, I was pretty shocked at how the horses were treated. It seemed a little harsh for children, but I guess back when it was written, cruelity to animals was probably witnessed by children much more since they had such reliance on horses. Worth the time, but not a favorite.
