it was amazing

I don't read many graphic novels - the format just doesn't quite appeal to me - so this might be my ONLY one for 2019... but that's ok, because it would probably be my favorite one anyway! I adored Jacob's first novel (The Sleepwalker's Guide to Dancing) and in my review of that I stated I hoped it wouldn't be another ten years before her next book (since it had taken her that long to write her first).

I'm glad it only took five, and this comes at JUST the right time, since it deals largely with how families of color cope with living in Mango Mussolini's America, and how a mother explains her worries to her mixed-race son. Although the first novel was clearly thinly disguised autobiography, this is pure memoir, and is quirky, funny, heartbreaking and thought-provoking, all at the same time.

PS: Watch this short promotional video featuring Jacob with her son, Zakir, and if you aren't immediately smitten and want to read BOTH her books, there is no hope for you!

Carmel Hanes I've written this one down. I've never read a graphic novel, for the same reason you stated you rarely do, but I may decide to read one in order to complete a BINGO challenge I decided to try. :) I was wondering how on earth I'd find a graphic novel to thanks!
