I'm not the biggest fan of the Victorian age. It's just not an era that interests me that much, even though I keep trying different books to see what I do like about it. But, this book really focuses on Parliament -- which was a pattern I picked up from the fourth book in the series. It's about the little squabbles and the things that went on with the public. While that stuff is interesting to read about, the title and subtitle of the book don't really capture that. Both of those things are footnotes in the book, really. Waterloo happened in a page and Victoria's Diamond Jubilee was, about, half a page.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of these later books in this series, I hope that Ackroyd keeps going into more contemporary times!
