it was amazing

You have to watch out for those 1200-page books that you can hardly put down. This was one of them, for me at least. Full of now-arcane references, florid language, intricate plot elements that hinged on knowledge of (or interest in) French history -- I loved it all. But if that's not your cup of tea, it'll be a long slog!

barefoot.julie It grabbed me too. I started it as one of those, "It's a classic, I should read it" books and ended up loving it.

However, I disagree that you need a knowledge of or interest in French history; I had neither. At the time, Abba's Waterloo was the extent of my French history :-P

Bill H No, no, on the contrary -- I enjoyed having to look up all that history as a sidebar! I sure didn't know it going in. "Able Was I Ere I Saw Elba" was about my full range :P
