Cliffhangers. Not a fan. And while this is a complete story and the cliffhanger is part of the series plot arc, I'm still impatient to find out what happens. Argh! The next book isn't available in audio yet! All right. Got that off my chest. I discovered this series last year? Or maybe the year before. It was fun and different, with interesting magical rules and urban fantasy tropes. I like the main characters and the secondary characters play well. Tori is snarky and funny and she muddles through with no real magical powers to call her own.

This book felt more like a placeholder. Lots of stuff happened in the previous 4 books. Stuff happened here but other than some setups for #6, there's just a feeling of...stuff happened. It's Christmas. Tori's brother, upset with her life choices, takes off for a cop conference in the Netherlands. The guys--Aaron, Kai, and Ezra--always go "home" to the Sinclair Academy to visit Aaron's parents. Who are snobs. And disappointed in their son's life choices. There's bad stuff happening and the Guild's alchemist "intern" is put in jeopardy. Other stuff happens, again feeling like a set up for the next book. 3.5 stars

Still, it was a quick listen and Cris Dukehart does a good job with the characterization and narration. Hopefully #6 and #7 appear in audio soon.
