Allow me to preface this review by saying that I am now thoroughly invested in this series. I was barely done with Clash of Kings for 2 minutes before picking up A Storm of Swords. I fully intend to continue reading these books and I've enjoyed every minute of it so far. From the characters to the well-developed intrigue, this plot has sucked me in.

Yet this novel left me feeling unsatisfied.

The manner in which Martin framed this particular novel has made me feel that it is only an interlude. Great things occurred in the first and now my suspense has been built up to expect great things to occur in the third. But as a stand alone novel? Clash of Kings did very little to make me appreciate it as a story of its own. I'm left with the feeling that its only purpose was to advance the characters and set the stage for ~something~ that shall occur in the later books. Hopefully I'm right.
