Dead Souls is my second russian lit novel. Written by an ever present author, who takes advantage of the main characters downtime to fill us in on their personality quirks, Gogol pulls the reader into the story, and has us questioning everyones moves at all times.

Chichikov, a charming con man, is trying to 'relieve' Russian landowners of their dead souls (peasants who have died but still show on the census). Along his travels, we meet some very interesting, naivee, and somewhat crazy characters, all looking out for number one, all trying to show their worth, or in some cases, their worthlessness.

I have to admit that while I loved the first half of the novel, once I hit Part2, the novel lost a little something for me. Hence the 3 stars. The ending seemed like a rushed, disorganised mess.

Overall, quite an entertaining story.

Chloe This is me, looking aghast at how quickly you've gone through this book. I think I'll be playing catch-up today.
