really liked it

Completely lovable book. Of course I am biased because I am a Basset Hound owner myself, but for young readers this is a fun book anyway with a really positive message about following your heart.

Homer W. Pudding is an outsider - a chubby 12-year-old boy who wants nothing more than to become a treasure hunter like his Uncle Drake. Unfortunately, he lives on a farm in the country, where his dad in particular won't hear of such nonsense. When his uncle dies unexpectedly, Homer inherits Drake's Basset Hound, who is eventually named Dog. With Dog and his older sister Gwendolyn, Homer sets out to complete his uncle's last treasure-hunting quest and meets a lively cast of characters along the way.

This book regularly made me laugh out loud, both because of how well the author captures the insistent but good-natured sensibility of a Basset and for her humorous asides directed at the reader. Another book that reminds of why I love YA lit.
