did not like it

i was very impressed with Caldwell's 'Tobacco Road'. In this novel though, Caldwell seems to have forgotten what both editing, and a fully-realised character actually are. He places characters at random and then virtually forgets them, in scenes that do not fit together and do not seem to serve any kind of purpose. A thoroughly frustrating and disappointing read. One of the most appallingly written books i've ever come across.
