I am rather divided on this book. I liked the first third or so and the general idea of a girl who used to have no feelings and is now slowly discovering them as they appear to her and re-evaluating her life and the people around her. It was intersting to see her develop her first crush on Alex, the new guy in her class. Her past and the reason for her violet eye color / lack of emotions is a mystery for a large part of the novel and I liked developing theories and trying to figure things out.
However, the way this information is eventually provided could have been better. Gemma's 'visions' were sometimes more of an information dump, and it was not quite credible that she couldn't put together some pieces that were completely obvious to the reader. Also, her obsession with Alex even though he hardly showed her any positive personality traits was infuriating at times.
The progression of the plot became rather repetitive after a while, too. However, there is quite a lot of world building / past hinted at that I guess will be explored in later installments of the series. I hope. Because as I said, I liked the basic set up. It's just that the excecution of it (and part of the dialogue) could have been done better, and some characters should have developped more over the course of events. Will I buy the sequel? I don't know yet...
