really liked it

I enjoyed 90% of this novel - the ending was bad. Kostova removes layers of mystery in this story, much as she did in The Historian. And also leaves a few layers at the end, also like the historian. But that is really where the comparisons end. This is a modern-day realistic novel, with smatterings of historical fiction in the form of letters and a few vignettes or flashbacks from an unknown person's memory - if it is meant to be a memory at all - see what I mean about mystery? Also, all of the main characters, and even some side characters, are painters.
