4 stars!

“People need stories, child. They bring us hope, and that hope is real.”

Skyward is an action packed and intriguing Sci-Fi novel with lovely characters and a really interesting and complex world-building. The pace is a little slow, but the narrative is engaging and the plot is very well written and executed. The humor is also very on point, as is M-Bot’s entire self!

Brandon Sanderson, once again, creates an unique and wonderful world with this new series. The illustrations throughout the novel only add to how rich the world-building is and really showcase just how detailed everything is. This is a great introduction and set up to the series, and Spin’s future promises to be as bright as the stars she keeps reaching for.

A fun read! A bit slow for the most part, but the action really picks up towards the end. There’s a lot of focus on flight training which… I personally could have done without, but the setting works well to develop all of the characters. Spin herself is a great narrator, if a bit too arrogant, but it’s lovely to read about her as she embarks in this journey.

The plot is really engrossing, especially as it presents a few mysteries in addition to all of the action. There’s quite a bit of tension throughout the narrative, which gets amped up the closer you get to the end of the novel. The twists and turns and character deaths are also really well written and quite touching. There is a tiny bit of too much tell instead of show towards the ending, though, but it still works well to set up the next novel in the series.

M-Bot is the true star of the novel, though, even though it takes a while for him to show up. He brings on the humor and some lighthearted moments throughout the book, even though he can be quite tactless at times. He’s a really fun character to read about and I personally am looking forward to more.

Overall, Skyward is a fun and quick read. It has a bit of a slow pace, but the action and tension works to balance it out. The characters are also very well developed and interesting, as is the plot, and the world-building brings it all together with its detail and complexity. Definitely recommend it to all Sci-Fi fans!
