This is one of the few books on my shelf that I cannot for the life of me remember when/why I picked it up. But as I perused the shelves looking for my next conquest, there it was. Miracle of miracles-- it was also the first of the Bernie Rhodenbarr series. It took me a little while to get into the setting and the characters. Some of the plot points seemed very obvious to me, to the point where I really wondered why a smart fellow like Bernie seemed so oblivious. But he had some tricks up his sleeve. (So then I was a little annoyed that Bernie didn't let the reader in on his "real" internal dialogue in this first-person narrative.) I ended up enjoying this murder mystery, though I don't foresee picking up any more in this series.
