I have the biggest book crush on Alex and Darla. I love them so hard and I want them to live happily ever after in that post-apocalyptic YA black cloud in the sky. I’ve read my fair share of dystopian/post-apoc YA books this year and this is one of the best. The characters are flawed yet heroic in the small ways that humans can be in times of great distress and extreme conditions. Alex is the teen I want my pretends kids to grow up to be and he allows his innate goodness to ultimately lead his actions despite what others do and say (view spoiler). Darla is the opposite side of the coin with her personality, and it’s why they complement each other so well. The only thing I didn’t like was Darla’s absence for a large portion of the book, which precipitates a lot of the action. In fact, this book is non-stop action, starting off with a bang in chapter one and not letting up until the very end. The book ends with a conversation between Darla and Alex that made me sigh and sawoon, and also hope really, really hard that we see more joint ass-kicking by them in the final installment. Together they are unstoppable.
