really liked it

Surf and Sand is the cleverly told story about a young girl who in 1959 lives in an old hotel on the beach with her mother and brother. Eleven year old Nell has come to love the hotel with all its halls and passages, but she especially loves the pool. She has come to think of it as her own. When she learns that twenty-one years ago a beautiful young actress vanished from the hotel, Nell makes it her mission to find out what happened to her. But, there is more. Now, another girl has gone missing. Can Nell solve both cases?

The story is told both in 1938 and 1959. Readers learn what led up to the actresses disappearance. We meet her friends and her lover. Nell is an intriguing character. Mature beyond her years and with a keen intellect, she is endearing. The novel is populated with interesting secondary characters, some of whom harbor secrets.

I found this to a well crafted mystery that takes place in a beautiful setting. A cold case and new case are intertwined and results are surprising. Highly recommended.
