Gathering Blue and Messenger were not so much "sequels" to The Giver as they were "Companion Books". Neither was able to capture my attention in the same way The Giver did, but both were worthwhile books.

Messenger is the story of Matt, another adolescent boy on the brink of adulthood. Like Jonas, he has a special ability that will allow him to help heal his community.
I actually found Matty to be a more likable character than Jonas was. He struggles with being "good" all the time - the lessons of his childhood (lying, cheating, stealing, stealth and selfish behavior) are in constant battle with the values of Village, where he now lives. His upbringing makes him the perfect person to do the job that needs to be done.
Matty's ending is much darker than Jonas's, and I was sad for it. However, I did find it appropriate to the story.
