In some ways I feel that this was two books because the stories weren't well woven together. Larson alternated chapters so that, just when you were hooked on the story of Holmes, he'd switch to Burnham, and vice versa. Ultimately, both stories were fascinating, but I had to make myself stick with the book to finish it. I think Larson does a way better job with post-Weimar/nascent-Nazi Berlin in In the Garden of Beasts, in terms of readability.
