Smilarly to "A Study in Scarlet," the story is actually two stories: First comes the crime-solving with Holmes and Watson, second comes the background story about gangsters in America. While I loved the first part and enjoyed that the case was given more room than one is used to from the short stories, the second part didn't interest me in the least. If I were to average the rating across both parts, I'd probably end up with three stars. However, as one can easily skip the background story and end up with an enjoyable, if shorter, read that way, so I'll give four stars.
