One of the problems with this book is it seems to start in the middle of a story so the first 50 pages are almost incoherent even if you, like me had read, the Mercy Thompson books. There apparently is a back story here in which one of the main characters rescues the other from an evil head wolf of a pack that answers to Bran, but its not easy to understand this story as its not set right out in the book.

Still when I kind of got the hang of it, the book turned out pretty good as it involved an evil witch from Asil's past and it also involves the awakening love story between charles, who is the designatd killer for Bran's pack and , = and Anna, a so called Omega wolf. Anna apparently has a power to calm the savage wolf. Briggs throws in a lot of information about Bran's background and the interrelationship between Bran and Charles and the other werewolfs that starts to answer questions about the pack brought up in the Mercy Thomspon novels.

If you like Briggs stick with it as its the first novel in a series of werewolf books, by Briggs, who when she is at top form writes fine. This is not her best effort.
